Lao-Korean Interpretation Training Institute

Greetings from the Director

Freely cross between Lao and Korean!”

Lao-Korean Interpretation Training Institute opens up a bright future for young people in Laos. There are only a few Korean language departments in Laos that are accredited by the Ministry of Education. Among the Laos students who graduated from this department of Korean, there are not many students who live as an interpreter as a job. After graduation, most of them go to work in factories in Korea. Or they often work as simple employees for Korean companies or companies in Laos. This is because graduating students have knowledge of the Korean language but lack the ability to actually understand and speak it.

There are several causes for this. First, the grammar of Lao is not well established. Grammar is being created, following Thai grammar. As a result, there are not many cases where I listen to Korean with grammar and speak Laotian with grammar. Second, Korean language education for foreigners is focused on listening, reading, and writing. There is a Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIC) that tells foreigners about their Korean proficiency. This TOPIC is largely composed of Ⅰ and Ⅱ. TOPIC Ⅰ consists of Levels 1 and 2, and the measurement areas are listening and reading. TOPIC Ⅱ consists of levels 3, 4, 5, and 6, and listening, reading, and writing are only the measurement ranges. The criteria for measuring the speaking area are not yet clear. With the Korean language proficiency test that does not measure the Lao language and speaking ability, which is being grammatically developed, local students lack the ability to speak. Despite this reality, the reality is that Koreans who come to Laos to work publicly or privately are seeking local interpreters.

Accordingly, the Lao-Korean Interpretation Training Institute was established to contribute to the development of Laos society by fostering young people who can translate freely between Laos and Korean.
